2016 Lessons Learned Report

To prepare this Lessons Learned Report, each member of the team was asked to write a short essay on that topic. Simeon Richards (11th Grade) When we signed up for a computer science and programming class, we had no idea that FIRST was even on the radar. About a quarter way through the year, however, we agreed that it would be a good course of action for our class to take. We registered immediately, and began to design our robot. This led to the first lesson we learned: Design the robot, but quickly. We learned this the hard way; we spent two weeks designing the thing. Next year we are going to limit our design period to maybe a week. This will give us the time to debate a general design, make the necessary modifications, and stick to the plan. Unfortunately, this led to the second lesson, build it. It sounds simple, but we spent a long, long time theorizing about the design during the building process. We built one part at a time, making sure it was perfect. There was nothing wrong with being careful, other than the fact that it slowed us down considerably. Next year we might consider branching out and giving everyone a job to speed up the process. Speaking of branching out, I believe our design style needs to change. At our first two...

FIRST Championships Top-off Our Rookie Year

Team bIrobot has wrapped up its rookie season with nice showing at the FRC FIRST Championship ranking 54th in the Carson division and number one for defense crossing points out of 75 robots in the division. We’ll be home on the island on Monday with plenty of stories to tell about working with our pit neighbors from Turkey and Mexico, alliance partners and opponents from across the country and around the world (including Beijing, China) , neighbors from Israel at our hotel and all sorts of new friends found across the divisions at a spectacular event. We thank the island community that came together from near and far to make our participation in FIRST...

St. Louis Here We Are

Thanks to outstanding support from our island community and beyond we’ve made it to St. Louis to participate in the FIRST World Championship.  We have some time this morning so we are headed to see the famous Gateway Arch and to investigate Forest Park which was the site of the 1904 Worlds Fair and is one of the largest municipal parks in the United States.  Cool.  Now, we are eating breakfast across the table from a team from Israel. You can track our trip at http://track.boyle.bz.  Check back here for updates or follow us on Twitter or Facebook. By the way, our faithful robot made it here before us (arriving Friday) thanks to our friends at FedEX and the Beaver Island Boat Company–both masters in logistics.  Thanks, guys and...

FRC Michigan Championship Results

The team is back from Grand Rapids after three days of intense competition.  With the help of great alliance members and our mentor FRC teams–we did well.  Indeed, well enough to qualify to attend the FRC Championship in St. Louis, Missouri.  Our final record at the event was 6-6-0 with  a ranking of 57 out of 102 teams.  Not our strongest performance of the season–but again good enough when combined with our performance at Standish (where we were the first pick of the third seeded alliance) and at Marysville (where we were the 3rd ranked team coming out of the qualification matches) to get us a seat at the Championship table.  We put a lot of hard work into getting where we’ve landed, but there is no doubt we wouldn’t be where we are without the help of many –and some good old Irish luck.  (Thank goodness we live on America’s Emerald Isle!) You can learn more about our plans to attend the FRC Championship event here. You can support our team here and by shopping at the bIrobot...

It’s Officially Official: We are Headed to the State Championship Event

With all the scores from events this weekend  in and tallied, we are ranked 37th out of 411 teams in the Michigan FRC District. We received official word last evening that, as a result of our standing,  we are invited to participate in the state championship event.  After due consideration and analysis, we have decided to graciously accept this invitation. (For those not in the know, that’s the FRC way unless you do it Kai’s way and just say “yes.”)  You can join us in Grand Rapids next Thursday through Saturday and help cheer us on as BICS sends its first-ever robotics team to a first ever team sport state championship event.  Information on the schedule, hotels and more is all right here.  You can also support the team and STEM at BICS by coming on board as a sponsor and/or buying one of our team t-shirts on the e-commerce site our team...
